Description of Project:

Development

The students of this project group have been attending a secondary school specializing on computer studies for almost four years. Computers and their different applications have a special importance for them. The subject Computer Studies takes up six lessons of the curriculum and the additional offers from Textverarbeitung via desktop publishing to programming are very popular.

Special questions, that are even difficult to be answered within the regular lessons keep coming up:

That’s why we agreed to the offer of IBM member Dr. Kurt Wimmer (IBM Austria is sponsoring our school since 1996) to start a project on Prof. Heinz Zemanek’s achievements on the occasion of his 80th birthday.

We were specially motivated because Prof. Zemanek agreed upon meeting the students for an interview. This meeting should be the highlight of our work.

Methodological reflections

After having had a first insight into Prof. Zemanek’s curriculum vitae we grasped the vast extent of the topic and we, the teachers, decided, that the project should be integrated into the regular lessons over a longer period of time. The offer of not obligatory exercises on computer studies within the framework of our computer emphasised lessons should be used to a large extend to work out our project. This way we had the opportunity to get together a project team of those students of the two fourth grades, that were really interested in the topic. Nobody was forced to do it and the regular lessons hardly had to undergo any changes.

Formation of the project – team

During the first talk with the classes we gave a short portrait of Prof. Zemanek on the one hand and offered the goal of the internet presentation on the other. The fact, that Prof. Zemanek built one of the first significant computers had a motivating effect on the students, as well as the opportunity to create websites themselves. After having gathered ideas and decided on the different topics a group of 27 students of two classes were formed. They worked on the topics in small groups and presented the results to each other.

Programming the websites

The "webmasters" had to tackle a very difficult task for they had never done it before. Programming HTML - pages slowly gets access into our computer studies lessons, but such a huge project needs good planing and consequent elaboration.

We are very proud of this group because all the pages were designed by the students themselves.
