The name "Mailüfterl" was supposed to be a joke. It was created in Darmstadt during a meeting in 1956, when Prof. Heinz Zemanek was reporting about his project.
"Mailüfterl" was not a big computer like its American counterparts, but according to Austrian standards it was very good, because it was set up on a basic of transistor. Philip's transistors, originally parts of hearing aids with a slow operation, were used.
A quotation by Prof. Heinz Zemanek: "Even if it can't match the rapid speed of American models called "Hurricane" or "Typhoon", it will be sufficient for a Viennese "Mailüfterl" (=soft breeze in May).
The proper name for the computer according to Prof. Zemanek is: Binär dezimaler Volltransistor Rechenautomat.
