The architecture of the "Mailüfterl" was based on a John Neumann – machine. John von Neumann had thought about what the ideal computing machine should look like.

In his opinion it should consist of the following units:

• arithmetic unit (carries out calculation processes)
• control unit (manages/controls everything; knows how to carry out orders)
• memory ( stores intermediate date)
• input and output devices (input by means of a rotary switch)
