| Hortus Arionis - a Roman garden | ||||
| The rich Romans liked their gardens a lot. There they created an oasis of tranquillity, a tiny piece of land in the metropolis of Rome – rus in urbe – as the poet Martial called his garden. These gardens were designed like parks, they were always laid out symmetrically, they were wonderfully tended and neatly pruned hedges marked their boundaries. And, of course, they were not lacking fountains, water basins and statues. On warm days you could relax there, read, write or simply enjoy the nice view. | ||||
| Our garden was developed during a slumber and play night of the 1st grade at our school. | ||||
| We named it hortus Arionis – after the poet Arion, who rides on a dolphin in the middle of the fountain. Under the cypresses marble benches are tempting to have a rest there and to contemplate. Along the path around the water basin there are small statues with favourite mythological motifs and box trees cut in ball-shape. Over the entrance a wild rose is growing. A tall wall roofed with tiles is surrounding the garden so that the precious rain water can flow inside. | ||||
| And behind the walls just imagine the hustle and bustle of a noisy city with over a million inhabitants. |
