The Italian architect Francesco Borromini was born
in Bissone, his father being an architect, too. From 1620 onwards he works
in Rome, first as an assistant of the architect Carlo Maderna, inter alia,
in the church masons´guild of St.Peter. After Maderna`s death
Borromini works together with Bernini in 1629. Their cooperation ends in
1633. Borromini breaks with traditional architecture. His buildings are
characterised by a kind of dynamics unknown in architecture before. Concave
and convex forms set surfaces swinging, the joy of playing with different
shapes starts spaces vibrating in structures moved in a complex way.
Barromini ranks among the most important architects of
high baroque although, having to deal with Bernini as a rival, he was not
always successful.
