Aim of the project:
The project is based on the idea to fill pupils with enthusiam for the world of baroque with the help of methods which are both modern and appropriate for their individual age-groups. In order to  achieve that we`ve chosen Francesco Borromini, actually because of two aspects:
On the one hand, his buildings illustrate dynamic architecture and the illusionistic playing with space in a brilliant and extraordinary way.
On the other hand, it is easier for the pupils to identify with him - an outsider who was treated unfairly by history - than with the outstanding artists of genius who are part of every curriculum.
Moreover the project raises the possibility of combining different  subjects at school. And the development of ideas and their realization in groups also improves the ability of working together in teams on the part of the pupils. In addition to that the possibility of putting sketches into reality is sure to motivate the pupils much more than their regular work in class.
The presentation of the practical pieces of work in the Internet may also have a positive effect on working with computers in a conscious and critical way. And what`s more, the Internet is the ideal medium to enable school to get in touch with the general public.

The idea behind the projects of our school:

At the beginning of the school year 1998/99 a project concerning the reshaping of the staircase was started. Tor years now different projects have been carried out to brighten up our school grounds and school building, thus improving our school`s atmosphere as well - "corporate identity" are the key words here. In recent years we have been concentrating, for example, on the decoration of our classrooms and of the air well of our assembly hall - the latter with the help of a gigantic mobile - or on the restructuring of our school - yard.

Changing the appearance of our concrete staircase - once thought to be quite esthetic - was the next logical  step. For this new project two teams were organized: The first one deals with planning sketches concerning the decoration of the staircase and its realization. The second one builds a model of the staircase on a scale of 1 : 25 in order to be able to see clearly what effect the sketches have. As a consequence of organisational problems (different time-tables etc.) there are only girls in the first and only boys in the second team.

Around the time the Borromini-project was presented the decoration group of the  Augustinus-Gymnasium developed the idea of enlarging the space perspectively by painting stairs on the white walls which people see right in front of them when going up and down the stairs respectively. In order to provide a visual change, but also to fulfil the requirements of the curriculum in a subtle way the following plan was devised: to illustrate the important epochs of art between the collar and the third floor. The idea as for the Borromini-project suited perfectly to all that. Which epoch could illustrate the breaking up of real space limits with the help of painted illusion better than the one of baroque ?

Because of that the idea of shaping the staircase with the help of an illusionistic continuation of the existing stairs is already a logical result of the baroque spirit.
To use the epoch of baroque as the beginning of the series of sketches is particularly attractive because  the sober, almost dreary concrete - esthetics of the existing staircase can be changed in the most dramatic way with the help of the rigour and movement of baroque architecture. In addition to that the pupils had to distance themselves from the rigid perspective constructions with which a drawing of the stairs, characterized by space, had to be begun, of course. Doing that the spell as for all the other sketches from other epochs is broken, too.
What the pupils building models could learn from baroque was to build something with "cheap" materials which only seem to be robust, such as the baroque stucco - elements or the decorations made of stucco-sculptures, which - judging from outside - appear valuable and solid but are made of cheap, easy and dirty charcoal "deep inside" and - to exaggerate a little - are only covered with a little plaster.
Here, using as little material as possible is meant to guarantee the greatest effect concerning the appearance, too. This circumstance also encouraged the pupils`ambition as for experiments and fiddling about.
Another team was charged with the task of presenting the whole project on the internet. This group was composed of 11 pupils of the 8th class who have chosen informatics as an elective.  Our presentation on the internet concerning the "Borromini Project" aims at showing the virtual representation of the best sketch in the real stairwell.
