Josef Anton Köpfle

The last supper
oil on canvas, altarpiece, 1793

Jesus sits at a table with his disciples. In his hand he holds a loaf of bread and a chalice stands on the desk. He looks up to the sky and raises his hands. Most disciples stare at Jesus Christ. Only Judas turns away from Jesus. In his hand he holds the sack with the 30 silver coins. The supper takes place in a church or a rich citizen's house. Behind Jesus there is a colonnade which ends in a balcony. Behind you can see a high room with huge windows. Two domes are the cealing of the colonnade. Behind Jesus the colonnade is covered with a piece of cloth up to the half. A candlestick hangs above the table, beteween a pink curtain, fixed with two ropes. The columns and the candles war richly decorated and devert from the meaning of the painting.

The picture is painted rather strangly. Ther colours in the foreground are richer, but the background shows more detail. Köpfle tries to make a mountain out of a molehill in this picture. The light draws a line throug the painting. Everything else is in the shadow.

It seems that Josef Anton Köpfle liked to paint architecture and details, like columns, colonades, domes, cloth and candlestick. The obvious meaning of the picture is not shown clearly. The people are too badly painted for being the most important thing in the painting.

... a story

The evening has come, in Jesus' house there is a big supper. Just in that moment Jesus wants to lift the wine for a prayer, IT comes in like a bolt of lightening. Some are shocked like thunderstruck. Petrus stands still, gazing at the light; his hands entwine up to IT, in his mind there is only one thought. "IT's here! I have lived my whole life for IT! I am the only one who should have IT!" Slowly the others awake and reach up to IT.

IT is the ENLIGHTMENT!!!

Jesus thinks by himself: "It is really IT, the only reason why I'm existing. I am one chosen to get the ENLIGHTMENT. Only me and one one else of those little bastards! Only me!!"

Also his disciples want to get rid of each other for getting IT. Petrus is able to catch IT with the holy plate. He races out of the room and disappears with his treasure.
