At the beginning of the chronology according after Christ,

the valley Schladming was only primeval forest. We know the old Roman way which is situated on
the northern side of the valley as a single report of this time.

The first inhabitants were Germans who were under the influence of the Romans.


The Slav word tribe "Zlaebnik" (for instance translates as "gorge mountain" as a name for the present Rohrmoos bordering to the valley creek gorge) shows us  the strong Slav influence in the centuries after the migration of peoples.
 

Schladming remains city to 1525



 

In the year 1408 the former judge Leonard Egkelzain signd a contract so that the people were allowed to mine ore. 


One of the most important branches of trade was 
the mining industry.

(peak 14 and 15 century). The first mining was for silver, lead- and copper ore. The German farmer war  produced dramatic climaxes in the summer of 1525 in the Salzburg – Styrian speaking area.


The Schladminger mountain letter,

as designated “cultural document by European meaning", formed not only the basics for the mountain legislation in the alpine region and in southern Germany but also for mountain contract of other fields central Europe.

The mountain letter of 1408 guided the large time at the mining industry of the city.
