The history of collecting minerals:
The history of collecting all different kinds of things is as old as mankind. Collecting minerals became very popular even in the early days of history. When man learned to produce metals from ores, the need for mining increased steadily. The first treasure vaults and collections of minerals date back to ancient times. Nowadays people spend fortunes on very precious and rare minerals and use sophisticated high-tech machinery to extract them. Millions of people all over the world are very keen on collecting rocks, crystal and minerals.

Minerals:
Minerals are a natural substance (not vegetable or animal) that have a constant chemical composition.
Well known places where minerals are found in Styria:
Large parts of Styria are of volcanic origin. A quarry near Klöch (south eastern part of Styria) is situated near a crater filled with solid basalt, scoria and tuff. This area is especially rich in minerals.

"Landesmuseum Joanneum":
The Joanneum Museum was founded in 1811 by the Styrian Archduke Johann in order to "gather anything that nature, the seasons, the industriousness and application of the Austrian people would bring forth". The Styrian Archduke Johann owned a considerable collection of minerals which are now part of the collection in the museum. Over the past years the collection has acquired international recognition (more than 100 000 various minerals can be seen in the exhibition).
