Richard Schaukal called him an Austrian Goya.
He called his painting "protocols of dreams".
He started his career with grotesque, spooky ink-drawings. Around 1900 he started using
more colours. In 1909 his only illustrated novel "The other side" was published.
Book illustrations became his most important field of activity which affected his
drawing-style a lot.
