The Nato was founded on the 4th of April 1949 in Washington D.C. by 12 states of Western Europe and North America as a safety alliance. The base of international law is ART. 51 of the UN-charta, that grants its members the right of individual self-defence and of collective self-defence. The Nato doesn't have its own armed forces.
Members: There are 16 members: Belgium, Denmark, Germany (since 1955), France, Greece (since 1952), Great Britain, Iceland, Italy, Canada, Luxembourg, Netherlands, Norway, Portugal, Spain (since 1982) Turkey (since 1952) and the USA. Iceland doesn't have its own armed force.
