Bernáth Aurél

1895-1982

Bernath Aurel was born in 1895 in Marcali, Hungary.
He spended his childhood in the area of Lake Balaton, here he got the first inspirations for painting. 1915 he went to Nagybanya. 1916, he had to report for duty, 1921 he moved to Vienna. Here, his first album with the title "graphic" came out.

In his paintings, you can see the romantic, hungarian Tradition and the european way of drawing, the Expressionism. First, in 1923, his drawings were shown in the gallery "Sturm". The work was called "Lively room" and was painted in Berlin. In 1924, another important composition with the title " Red animal" was exhibited. This picture, constructed with silver colours and with a red bull on it, was probably the main work of this epoch, but it was destroyed during the occupation of Budapest.

In 1926, Aurel moved to Budapest. In the meantime, he travelled through Europe. In 1928 in Berlin he had his first exhibition of his collection. It was a incredible success. The picture "Riviera", it shows the infinite sea behind the rock face or "Autem", this picture shows some chairs that are leaned to a table, were parts of this exhibition.

In 1928 he painted his mean work with the title "Winter". This picture shows a flying crow in front of a snow covered hill. After this exhibition he became one of the most important figures of the hungarian artists.
